About RAWCS Southern Region

RAWCS Southern Region meets on a quarterly basis at the Broadmeadows Rotary Centre. Corner Glenroy and Waterloo Roads, Glenroy. (Old signal box). The October meeting which includes the AGM, is usually held at a  location in one of the five other districts in Southern Region (in 2010 Hobart, in 2011 Geelong), this enables members in these districts to come along and get to know the workings of RAWCS.

The Region is actively involved in all of the RAWCS projects, especially Rotary Volunteers and Donations in Kind, and Safe Water Saves Lives.

Donations in Kind (DIK)

  1. The region is fortunate to have several  DIK storage facilities; the old fire station at Essendon Airport, Council Depot at Corio (Geelong), an old wool store at West Footscray,  and Tasmania uses storage containers in the north and the south of the island.

Recipient countries include Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Zambia.

Amongst recent donations from business partnerships were two heart machines for Sri Lanka. The cardiac catheterisation labs, donated from two Victorian Hospitals, are the first used in that country's public hospitals.

Rotary Volunteers

Southern Region is very active in this field and there is a constant movement of teams to various countries in our zone.

One project supported by a number of Districts in this region is the Fiji Rotahomes Village. Stage 2 involving the construction of 160 basic houses with toilet, shower & kitchen and a large community hall.

Another is Project 12- 2008-9 in Gouno New Guinea. A team of volunteers returned on 4th of August  2010 from a successful trip to the remote village of Gouno located at an altitude of approx 2,600 m. situated 86 kilometres south of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands of PNG.

The aim was to do  electrical, carpentry and plumbing work on the new health centre as well as deliver 3 shipping containers of medical, classroom furniture and books to our project school as well as 5 surrounding community schools..

Safe Water Save Lives (SWSL)

SWSL virtually falls under the umbrella of Rotary Volunteers, however, for a number of years a number of Rotarians and Clubs have specialized in this area with steel tanks and the construction of concrete tanks on site. The Region has identified this as a special needs program and is very strong in this area. An example is the Water Supply organisation at Soibada, Manatuto District, EastTimor.
'To organise existing, no-operational water pipes to supply schools and villages. Plumbing and general handy skills required'.

FUNDING
RAWCS projects and programs are funded largely by local Rotary Clubs and Rotary International, with the help of generous public, corporate and government support.

The Rotary Foundation Grants program has often provided "matching grants" to Rotary Clubs for individual programs, contributing additional funding to that raised by the individual Rotary Club. Additional AusAID subsidies have also enhanced the effectiveness of local Rotary clubs' efforts on such world community service projects.

RAWCS Overseas Aid Fund is a Deductible Gift Recipient so is able to offer tax deductible donations to support organisations with worthy projects in Australia and overseas.

Our Overseas Aid Fund holds the following registrations which will enable it to accept tax deductible donations and grants from all sources in Australia including business coorporations and not-for-profit organisations.

  • Deductable Gift Recipient
  • Tax Concession Charity
  • Income Tax Exempt Fund
If yourself or your company would like to contribute to or become involved in a RAWCS project, you can click here to find out more.
