Adrian reports:

While it didn't all go as planned - the container arrived 13 hours before we were leaving to come home - we achieved a lot and are planning another team to return in March 2012.

Here is a quick overview of what we achieved at the School, Health Clinic and Village:
• Refurbished an old building as a school library, including power so they can have computers. The library now has 250 books and anot...her 2000 in the container still to be catalogued. 10 computers are still in the container to be installed in 2012.
• Spend a lot of time with the kids reading to them in class and at night to those who came to our house. They have never had books read to them before.
• Cleaned and painted delivery room, exam room, maternity and general ward at the Nondugl Health Clinic.
• 3 babies were born in our 2nd week and they were all named after members of our team.
• Nurse Judy (one of our team) started in-servicing nursing staff on general hygiene and hospital cleaning. We got cupboards opened that had been locked for 5-10 years and found 2 sterilizing units - never used! They didn't know how to use them so were sterilizing with a cold water wash and sitting instruments in the sun.
• Installed 20 beds in the hospital - they had none before.
• Fixed lots of electrical things around the Health Clinic
• Bought 4 sewing machines (hand wound, not electric) and fabric and taught women to cut simple patterns and sew
• Completed the installation of 5 rain water tanks
Of course we made lots of friends, experienced an amazing way of life, had a lot of laughs, ate the most amazing pineapples and made plans for the next trip to finish off the library and refurbish the school's teacher housing.

Rebuilding Lives in Sri Lanka: Tsunami Project

The tsunamis on Boxing Day, 26 December 2004, completely destroyed the fishing village of Ulla, near Arugambay in Sri Lanka.  This project, complete in April 2007, provided 46 new homes for Ulla's people in a new Rotary Village at Sengaman.

The UK Partner's report (District 1110 ) says the project exemplifies what Rotary stands for -- Service Above Self -- and demonstrates what is possible when business and professional people from around the world, united in the ideal of service, combine their skills and experience to deliver a vision.
